Automotive Ignition Replacement & Repair – Step-By-Step Service Process

Description

When you book an ignition repair or replacement with Mr Key Pro, here’s exactly what you can expect from start to finish. Our process is designed to be efficient, transparent, and safe for both you and your vehicle.

Features :

Initial Call & Service Assessment

What happens:

  • We gather your vehicle details (year, make, model, VIN if available).
  • You describe the ignition symptoms—key won’t turn, stuck cylinder, intermittent start, broken key inside, electronic ignition faults, etc.
  • Our technician performs a remote pre-diagnosis to determine whether the issue is:
    • Mechanical (jammed wafers, worn tumblers, stuck cylinder)
    • Key-related (worn key, incorrect key code, bent blade, low battery on proximity fob)
    • Electronic (steering lock, immobilizer, ESL/ESM failure, BCM issues)
  • We confirm your location and provide an ETA and upfront pricing estimate.

On-Site Arrival & Verification

What happens:

  • The technician arrives in a fully equipped mobile workshop.
  • Identity and vehicle ownership verification is completed for your security.
  • The technician performs an initial inspection of the vehicle:
    • Steering wheel behavior
    • Ignition lock condition
    • Key function
    • Battery and electrical condition
    • Dashboard immobilizer indicators

Full Diagnostic & Failure Analysis

Depending on the symptoms, the technician will:

Mechanical Ignition Diagnosis

  • Test the key for proper cut depth using laser key reader or gauge.
  • Remove trim surrounding the ignition.
  • Inspect the ignition lock cylinder for binding wafers, stuck pins, or a seized core.

Electronic/Push-Button Start Diagnosis

  • Scan the vehicle using advanced diagnostic tools (Autel, Xhorse, dealer-level scanners).
  • Check for immobilizer, steering lock (ESL), or start authorization faults.
  • Test the ignition switch module, steering lock module, or ignition barrel electronics.

Determining the Correct Repair Path

At this stage, we confirm whether your ignition requires:

  • Rebuilding (cleaning, replacing wafers/springs, lubricant treatment)
  • Repair (new internal components, restoring proper mechanical movement)
  • Complete Replacement (new cylinder keyed to your existing key or new coded key set)

Ignition Removal & Repair/Replacement

What happens:

  • Trim panels are safely removed without damage.
  • The ignition cylinder or ignition switch unit is removed using proper tools (no drilling unless absolutely required).

If Repairing/Rebuilding:

  • Technician disassembles the ignition lock.
  • Worn wafers, springs, and tumblers are replaced.
  • Cylinder is matched to your existing key (no new key required).
  • Unit is cleaned, polished, and lubricated for smooth operation.

If Replacing:

  • A brand-new cylinder or ignition switch is installed.
  • If needed, new keys are cut on-site to OEM specification using laser-cut and high-security equipment.
  • Immobilizer or transponder programming is completed to ensure the new key is authorized to start the vehicle.

Key Programming (If Required)

For newer vehicles with chipped or proximity keys:

  • We program new keys to the vehicle ECU/BCM.
  • Immobilizer syncing is performed.
  • Steering lock and electronic ignition modules are calibrated if applicable.

Reassembly & System Reset

  • All panels and trim pieces are reinstalled, clipped, or screwed back into factory positions.
  • Ignition and key modules are reset or initialized as needed.
  • The vehicle is rechecked for stored fault codes.

Final Testing & Quality Check

Before we hand the vehicle back, we perform a full test:

Mechanical Testing

  • Key turns smoothly in all positions.
  • No sticking or binding in ACC/ON/START positions.

Electrical/Electronic Testing

  • Push-button start (if applicable) operates correctly.
  • Immobilizer light turns off normally.
  • Vehicle starts consistently.
  • Steering lock engages/disengages properly.

Customer Walkthrough

  • Technician demonstrates smooth operation.
  • We explain what was repaired/replaced.
  • Warranty information and care tips are provided.
